If you're outfitting a detailing bay for the first time — or you keep re-buying gear because the cheap stuff didn't hold up — this checklist is for you. I'm the procurement manager at a 14-person auto detailing company, and these are the six things I review before I spend any of our roughly $45,000 annual equipment budget.
Step 1: Inventory what you actually own
This sounds so obvious that everyone skips it. I skipped it too, for my first two years in this seat, until a $1,200 order of wash mitts arrived and we discovered 40 brand-new mitts sitting untouched in a storage bin.
Walk the shop. Write down what you have. Check your towels for lint, your pads for breakdown, your polishes for separation. If there are three half-empty bottles of compound from three different brands, buying a fourth one isn't planning. It's clutter.

Buy for the work you do, not the work you're dreaming about. If you want to add ceramic coating services, buy a small starter kit and learn the process before stocking $1,000 of inventory. I've seen too many shops buy gear for aspirational workflows and eat the cost later.
